Padded Tooling

Design & Manufacture Special JPT Padded Boring Tools

Custom-engineered padded boring tools and reamers for high-volume automotive production — built for precision, long tool life, and consistent bore quality across demanding applications.

What Are Padded Boring Tools?

JPT padded boring tools are precision-machined tools that use carbide or PCD (polycrystalline diamond) cutting pads brazed or mechanically fastened directly to the tool body. Unlike cartridge-style tools where inserts are indexed and replaced, padded boring tools provide an extremely rigid, low-profile cutting geometry — making them the preferred choice for finish boring and reaming operations where bore size tolerance, surface finish, and roundness are critical.

Padded boring tools are commonly used in applications where the bore diameter is too small for a cartridge design, where the cutting forces demand a stiffer tool body interface, or where the surface finish requirement is too tight for a standard indexable insert. JPT designs and manufactures padded boring tools and padded reamers for a wide range of automotive and industrial applications.

JPT Special Padded Boring Tools

JPT special padded boring tools are engineered to deliver consistent bore size, surface finish, and roundness across thousands of production cycles. Each tool is built to order — designed around your bore diameter, tolerance, workpiece material, and machine spindle interface.

Capital Components:

  • Precision-ground alloy steel or carbide tool bodies — sized for maximum rigidity in the working bore diameter
  • Carbide or PCD cutting pads brazed to exact position — ground in place after brazing for precise size and geometry
  • Hardened guide pad surfaces for bore piloting and tool stabilization during the cut
  • HSK, CAT, and custom spindle interfaces available to match your machining center
  • Coolant-through construction for heat management and chip evacuation in tight bores

Cutting Detail:

  • Cutting pad geometry ground to your specific bore diameter and surface finish requirement
  • Multi-flute designs available for higher feed rates and improved surface finish on through-bores
  • PCD pad specifications for aluminum and non-ferrous materials requiring mirror-finish bore quality
  • Carbide pad specifications for cast iron, steel, and hardened alloy applications
  • Pad size and relief angles specified to match your material, cutting speed, and tool life targets

JPT Special Padded Reamers

JPT padded reamers are designed for finish reaming operations where bore size tolerance and surface finish must be held to the tightest specifications in the part. Padded reamers use the same brazed-pad construction as padded boring tools — providing the rigidity and geometric stability that indexable reamers cannot match in demanding finish operations.

Capital Components:

  • Multi-flute carbide or PCD pad construction for superior finish and bore geometry
  • Precision-ground guide pads for bore piloting and chatter suppression throughout the cut
  • HSK brazed-design interfaces for direct spindle mounting — eliminating intermediate adapters and maximizing rigidity
  • Through-coolant construction standard for chip management in finish reaming operations

Cutting Detail:

  • Reamer geometry ground to final bore size — pads are set and ground after brazing for exact diameter
  • Flute count and helix specified to optimize chip load and surface finish for your material
  • Back-taper ground into the reamer body to prevent drag and protect the finished bore surface
  • Quick-change designs available for high-volume production lines where tool change time is critical

Brazed Design Padded Tooling

JPT’s brazed-design padded boring tools and reamers represent the highest level of rigidity available in a precision boring or reaming tool. By brazing the cutting pad directly to the tool body and grinding to final size after brazing, JPT eliminates the stack-up tolerances present in cartridge or insert-based designs. The result is a tool with a single, unified cutting geometry — capable of holding bore tolerances that indexable tooling cannot reliably achieve.

Brazed-design padded tooling is particularly well-suited for applications including:

  • Finish bores on differential carriers and differential cases where bore size directly affects bearing preload
  • Cam bore finishing on cylinder heads where diameter and roundness affect cam journal clearance and oil retention
  • Drive shaft slip yoke bores where surface finish and size tolerance affect seal life
  • Engine block bores requiring tight roundness and cylindricity for liner fit or bearing crush

Tooling Applications for JPT Padded Boring Tools

JPT tools are production-proven across a wide range of high-volume automotive applications where finish bore quality is non-negotiable.

Differential Case Tooling

Padded boring tools for finish boring differential case bearing bores where size tolerance and roundness directly affect bearing preload and assembly fit.

Cylinder Head Tooling

Quick-change padded boring tools for cam tower bore finishing. Tight cam journal clearance requirements demand the bore consistency that only brazed-pad tooling reliably delivers.

Engine Block Tooling

Padded reamers for engine block bore finishing operations including liner bores and main bearing bores where surface finish and roundness are critical to engine performance and longevity.

Boring Bars with Replaceable Cartridges

Where padded boring tools deliver the highest finish quality, JPT cartridge-style boring bars complement the lineup for roughing and semi-finish operations earlier in the bore sequence.
