Cover Tooling
| JPT’s indexable cover tooling is engineered for the precise boring, facing, grooving, and drilling operations required to machine automotive and diesel engine covers, transmission covers, and powertrain covers to specification. Engine and transmission covers present unique tooling challenges — thin-wall aluminum construction, seal bore concentricity, OD groove geometry, and long-overhang drilling applications all require tooling designed specifically for the part and the machine. JPT has been designing and manufacturing special indexable cover tooling since 1971, serving automotive OEMs and Tier 1 powertrain suppliers across North America.
Every indexable cover tooling system JPT produces is custom engineered to the specific cover geometry, material, machine platform, and cycle time requirements of your application. JPT does not sell catalog tooling for cover production. Our application engineers work directly with manufacturing engineers to develop tooling solutions that reduce cycle time, improve surface finish, and extend tool life from the first part. |

Why PCD Diamond for Cover Tooling
Automotive and transmission covers are predominantly aluminum — a material that demands PCD diamond cutting edges for optimal tool life and surface finish in high-volume production. PCD diamond tooling delivers dramatically longer tool life than carbide in aluminum applications, with superior surface finish and consistent bore geometry across hundreds of thousands of parts. JPT’s PCD diamond cover tooling includes multi-flute boring bars, drills, spot face tools, and orbital grooving tools — all engineered to the specific geometry and production requirements of your cover application.
JPT’s OD orbital grooving tools are particularly effective for seal groove applications on engine and transmission covers. The laydown indexable insert design delivers fast cycle times, superior surface finish, and long tool life compared to conventional grooving approaches. Both indexable carbide and brazed PCD diamond versions are available depending on your material and production volume requirements. See our Grooving Tools page for more on JPT’s grooving capabilities.

JPT Quality and Application Support
JPT holds ISO 9001:2015 certification, ensuring that design, manufacturing, and inspection processes for every indexable cover tooling system meet rigorous quality standards. All tooling is manufactured at JPT’s facility in Macomb County, Michigan, and is supported by our application engineering team from design through production. JPT is not a catalog supplier — every cover tooling solution begins with your part drawing, your machine platform, and your production requirements.
Manufacturing engineers and tooling buyers working on engine and transmission cover machining applications can find additional industry resources through the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and government procurement information at SAM.gov.
JPT’s indexable cover tooling programs have covered front engine covers, rear engine covers, transmission end covers, and accessory drive covers across passenger car, light truck, and heavy truck applications. Cover geometry varies significantly across platforms — bore diameters, seal groove locations, face configurations, and drilling patterns all differ by application. JPT’s application engineers review each cover drawing individually to specify the right tool configuration, insert grade, and cutting parameters for your specific geometry and material.
JPT’s indexable cover tooling is available for both aluminum and cast iron cover applications, with PCD diamond tooling specified for aluminum and coated carbide grades for cast iron and nodular iron materials. Whether your program runs on high-speed CNC machining centers or dedicated special-purpose equipment, every JPT cover tooling solution is backed by our ISO 9001:2015 quality system, more than five decades of special indexable tooling experience, and repair and reconditioning services to extend the working life of your existing cover tooling investment.
JPT has supported cover tooling programs for major automotive OEM and Tier 1 suppliers across North America for more than five decades. Our engineering team brings deep application knowledge to every program — from initial tool design through production launch and ongoing support. When standard tooling fails to meet cycle time, surface finish, or tool life requirements, JPT’s custom-engineered approach delivers results that off-the-shelf solutions cannot match.

The JPT Way
Most tooling problems aren’t solved by buying off the shelf. They’re solved by understanding the application, the machine, and the process — then engineering the right solution.
Cutting tools. Fixturing. Complete production solutions. That’s been the JPT way since 1971. No catalogs. No guessing. Just engineering.
