Cylinder Head Tooling
JPT cylinder head tooling solutions
JPT’s cylinder head tooling is engineered for the precise CAM boring, valve seat machining, and milling operations required to produce automotive, truck, gas, and diesel cylinder heads to specification. Cylinder heads are among the most complex and tolerance-critical components in engine production — camshaft bores, valve seats, valve guides, injector bores, and deck faces all require consistent accuracy and surface finish across high-volume production runs. JPT has been designing and manufacturing special cylinder head tooling since 1971, serving automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers producing gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel engines.
Every cylinder head tooling system JPT produces is custom engineered to the specific head geometry, material, machine platform, and cycle time requirements of your application. JPT does not sell catalog tooling for cylinder head production. Our application engineers work directly with engine manufacturers to develop tooling solutions that improve bore finish quality, reduce cycle time, and extend tool life from the first part.

CAM Bore and Line Bar Tooling
Camshaft bore accuracy is critical to valve timing, engine efficiency, and bearing life. JPT engineers both rough CAM bore tooling and finish CAM line bars optimized for the specific bore diameter, bearing count, and head length of your engine. JPT’s CAM line bars are available in semi-finish and finish configurations, engineered for the specific material — cast iron or aluminum — and compatible with both special-purpose transfer line equipment and CNC machining centers.
Finish CAM line bars for cylinder head production require the same engineering discipline as crank line bars for engine blocks — precise bore alignment, controlled surface finish, and consistent diameter across all bearing positions in a single pass. JPT’s line bar tooling for cylinder head applications draws on the same application engineering depth that JPT applies across all engine bore tooling programs. See our Line Bars page for more on JPT’s line bar capabilities.
Valve Seat Tooling — Plunge and Generating Methods
Valve seat machining is one of the most critical operations in cylinder head production. The valve seat angle, width, and surface finish directly affect valve sealing, heat transfer, and engine emissions performance. JPT engineers valve seat tooling using two methods — plunge machining and generating — and selects the right approach based on your specific head geometry, production volume, and machine platform.
Plunge machining uses a multi-edge indexable seat cutter that is fed axially into the valve seat pocket to cut the seat angle in a single plunge pass. JPT’s plunge seat cutters are available in rough and finish configurations with indexable inserts for both intake and exhaust seat applications. HSK shanks and solid carbide reamers are standard for precise valve guide and seat concentricity.
Generating valve seats uses JPT’s motion tool technology — converting rotary spindle motion into precisely controlled radial feed to machine the complete seat profile in a single pass. The generating approach consistently delivers superior seat geometry, concentricity, and surface finish compared to plunge machining, and is particularly effective in high-volume production environments where seat quality consistency across thousands of parts per shift is critical.

Cylinder Head Tooling and the Complete Engine Program
Cylinder head tooling is one part of a complete engine machining program. JPT supplies special tooling for every major engine block and cylinder head operation — cylinder bore tooling, crank line bars, deck milling, engine liner tooling, bearing cap broaching, and more. See our Engine Block Tooling and Engine Liner Tooling pages for JPT’s full engine production capabilities.
The ability to source cylinder head tooling and engine block tooling from the same engineering-driven manufacturer simplifies program management and ensures tooling compatibility across operations. JPT has supported complete engine tooling programs for automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers in North America for more than five decades.
JPT Quality and Application Support
JPT holds ISO 9001:2015 certification, ensuring that design, manufacturing, and inspection processes for every cylinder head tooling system meet rigorous quality standards. All tooling is manufactured at JPT’s facility in Macomb County, Michigan, and is supported by our application engineering team from design through production.
Manufacturing engineers and tooling buyers working on cylinder head machining applications can find additional industry resources through the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and government procurement information at SAM.gov.

The JPT Way
Most tooling problems aren’t solved by buying off the shelf. They’re solved by understanding the application, the machine, and the process — then engineering the right solution.
Cutting tools. Fixturing. Complete production solutions. That’s been the JPT way since 1971. No catalogs. No guessing. Just engineering.
