Differential Case Tooling
Differential Case Tooling | JPT Complete Solutions
JPT has engineered differential case tooling since 1973 — supporting every machining platform from prototype through full production volume. Whether you’re machining spherical seats, side gear faces, or complete internal geometries, JPT has a proven solution for your equipment and your process.
Differential Case or Differential Carrier — Which Are You Machining?
In many automotive plants, differential cases and differential carriers are machined in the same facility — sometimes on adjacent lines. The two terms are often used interchangeably, but they are different parts requiring different tooling solutions.
| Differential Case | Differential Carrier |
|---|---|
| The rotating internal assembly — contains the spider gears, side gears, and spherical seat surfaces. Requires spherical seat and side gear face machining. | The stationary housing that holds the differential case assembly. Requires bore, face, and feature machining on the carrier body. |

JPT Differential Case Tooling — Choose Your Machining Approach
JPT supports every differential case machining platform. The right solution depends on your current equipment, production volume, and process flexibility requirements. JPT has been the tooling partner of choice for differential case manufacturers since 1973 — with over 70 differential case part prints in our application library from the past five years alone.
Three distinct approaches are available:
JPT PASS™ System — Drop-In Tooling and Fixturing for CNC Equipment
![]()
The JPT PASS™ System is a patented drop-in tooling and fixturing platform originally developed for prototype and low-volume differential case manufacturers — and now production-proven across high-volume automotive lines worldwide. The PASS System was designed from the ground up for rapid changeover, balanced line manufacturing, and prototype-to-production continuity.
PASS System Advantages:
- Fastest cycle time on the line — JPT PASS System operations are typically the fastest in the differential case machining sequence
- Automation ready — fully optimized for automated part handling and loading
- 1 operator: 4 machines — manual operation allows a single operator to run four PASS System machines simultaneously
- Rapid changeover — fixture and tooling changes complete in under one hour; for a family of differential case parts, changeover can be measured in seconds
- Sizes 7¼ to 11 on the same equipment — no dedicated machine per part size required
- Prototype to production continuity — PASS System tooling validated at prototype becomes your production tooling; PPAP, quality data, and tool life are already established when production launches
- Balanced line scalability — add machines upstream as production volumes grow without changing the PASS process or re-qualifying tooling
The PASS System requires upfront equipment and process commitment. JPT works directly with machine tool builders and manufacturers at the line design stage to ensure proper implementation. Customers already running dedicated equipment may find PASS System conversion requires capital investment — but for new lines or prototype operations, the PASS System delivers advantages that dedicated equipment cannot match.

Drop-In and Turning Tool Options — Standard and Competition-Compatible
![]()
For manufacturers already running dedicated differential case equipment — JPT or competitor platforms — JPT manufactures precision drop-in tooling compatible with your existing setup. JPT’s precision insert manufacturing and machining capabilities allow us to produce tooling for a wide range of drop-in platforms, including non-JPT systems where customers need a higher-quality tooling source than the original equipment supplier provides.
Drop-In Tooling Options:
- Spherical seat cutters — brazed or indexable, single and double ended
- Side gear face cutters — brazed or indexable, single and double ended
- Drive arbors and slave arbors
- Hangers and holding shafts
- Tool setting gages
- Micro-adjust pin bore
- Turning tools — gooseneck and other configurations for conventional turning setups
- DFC™ surface treatment for friction reduction and corrosion resistance
- Coolant through the tool available
- Repair and refurbishment services
Standard differential case machining requires two separate operations — spherical seat machining and side gear flat face machining — typically performed on separate dedicated machines. JPT drop-in tooling is engineered to perform both operations at the tolerances and tool life your production volumes demand.

Full Sphere — Single Tool Internal Turning
![]()
JPT Full Sphere tooling machines the rough and finish pass in a single internal turning operation within the differential case. Where standard tuning machining often requires separate redundant tools and often separate rough and finish tooling the JPT Full Sphere motion tool consolidates both into one tool pass.
Full Sphere Advantages:
- Single tool handles both spherical seat and side gear face features
- Eliminates the need for separate spherical seat and side gear cutters
- Reduces machine count potential on new line designs
- Requires machine tool evaluation to confirm compatibility
Full Sphere Considerations:
- Tool life is shorter compared to dedicated spherical seat and side gear tooling
- Surface finish and size control require closer monitoring than dedicated tooling approaches
- Best suited for applications where machine count reduction outweighs per-tool cost considerations
JPT recommends a machine tool evaluation prior to Full Sphere implementation to confirm the approach is appropriate for your specific part, machine, and production volume requirements.

Which Approach Is Right for You?
| Your Situation | Recommended Approach |
|---|---|
| New differential case line — open to process selection | JPT PASS™ System |
| Prototype or low-volume — need flexibility and fast changeover | JPT PASS™ System |
| Existing dedicated equipment — JPT or competitor platform | Drop-In Tooling |
| Conventional turning setup — gooseneck or turning tools | Drop-In / Turning Tools |
| Machine count reduction is the priority — open to evaluation | Full Sphere |
| Machining the carrier housing — not the case | Differential Carrier Tooling |
Why Differential Case Tooling Is Not a Commodity
JPT is frequently asked to quote differential case tooling — cutters and back-up inserts — without broader process involvement. In our experience, this approach consistently produces poor results. Differential case machining is not a catalog tooling application. The tolerances, workpiece materials, machine tool specifications, fixturing, gaging, and run-off requirements all interact in ways that make the tooling only one element of a successful outcome.
JPT’s involvement across all elements of the differential case machining process — fixture design, cutter body and hanger design, drive arbor engagement, insert material and geometry, speeds and feeds, part-in condition, locate and clamping method, gaging, and run-off — is what produces tool life in the many thousands of cycles and workpiece quality that meets production requirements consistently.
Our application library of over 70 differential case part prints from the past five years reflects the depth of process knowledge JPT brings to every engagement. Differential cases are a prime focus of JPT — and have been since 1973.
Also Machining Differential Carriers?
If your facility machines both differential cases and differential carriers, JPT has dedicated tooling solutions for carrier housing machining as well. See our Differential Carrier Tooling page for the complete JPT carrier offering.

The JPT Way
Most tooling problems aren’t solved by buying off the shelf. They’re solved by understanding the application, the machine, and the process — then engineering the right solution.
Cutting tools. Fixturing. Complete production solutions. That’s been the JPT way since 1971. No catalogs. No guessing. Just engineering.
